Welcome to Growing Security. The idea here is to share security information and help you grow in your security knowledge and to help you and your company grow in their security maturity. (Hence the growing in the title). It’ll usually be techie here but some “paper security” topics will occasionally show up as well, whether NIST, PCI or what have you. I have worked in security and system administration for almost 20 years. Before officially being considered working in a security role, I worked in as a system administration/engineering doing security functions. Now, I work as an architect and engineer on security solutions for customer and employee security. I have worked in a number of industry sectors including education, printing, entertainment, manufacturing and communications for both telephone and cable companies. I also used to author a weekly column author for Lockergnome’s online communities.
As I said, there might be some occasional not-as-technical stuff, but at it’s core this site is about routing, IP networking, firewalls, IDSes, logs, vulnerability scanning software, monitoring, encryption, data and system integrity and more which will often be the focus here. Whether it’s IDS software configs, kernel flags for iptables, log collection, subnetting, VoIP or virtualization I’m sure it’ll all get covered here eventually. And my hope is that you will have benefited from this information as you grow your security.
